Do You Have a Workplace Mentor You Should! - Workology Do You Have a Workplace Mentor? You Should! I have been very fortunate in my life to have to been born into families with powerful women. Powerful to me means many things; strong, classy, smart, tactful, etc. are a few of the words that come to mind. Born and raised by powerful women, I have surrounded myself with them and built a network of mutually beneficial relationships. Do you have a mentor? Perhaps you are a mentor to someone else and don’t even realize it. I encourage you to give it some thought; from a female perspective these relationships can shape your life in more ways than one. Do You Have a Workplace Mentor? You Should! Who do you call when you have a rough day? Who do you call for advice in life in general? Chances are these top 15 people in your list of dialed calls or emails sent are your mentors. Most of my mentors have given me both personal and business advice, bounced ideas off of or have talked me off of a ledge when I doubted myself. Women Empowerment I am sure there is a study somewhere on how women empower other women, just a gut feeling. Working with women can be challenging, this is my personal view from past experiences Truly, I am not being sexist. These same women can empower you to be a better person in life or in business. Women promote other women, like it or not. Seek out relationships where you can learn, feel confident and ask questions. Always take the high road, kill people with kindness and build relationships that are mutually beneficial to your growth as a professional. Don’t be afraid to admit What You Don’t Know Don’t have a mentor? Pick up the phone. Call someone you met at a networking event, ask them to coffee. Relationships start with a phone call, they won’t happen overnight. Step out of the regular, do something different, seek a different opinion, a different perspective.   Get involved in something you are passionate about and again surround yourself with those people whom you can learn from and in turn can learn from you â€" again forming that mutually beneficial relationship. The world is a competitive place and everyone wants to be the best, however what is most important is being your best and doing this with people who you respect and who respect you. Detox your life of negativity. Always remember that just as there are people who want to see you succeed, there are others that are right there ready to put you in your place. Really, how dare you to take advantage of people who are willing to share their hard-earned knowledge and experience.   These are the same people who will turn on you the moment it benefits them. So people whose behaviors, comments or situations that put you in an uncomfortable place â€" rid them from your life! There is a quote by Benjamin Franklin that really hits home for me.   He says “Tell me and I   forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”. These are the types of mentors you should seek out. These mentors have your best interest in mind and are willing to go the extra mile for you.
